William A. Smith was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. He received bounty and donation land grants like so many others that served. One of the grants was in modern day Clay County. Family stories claim that he went traveled to his grant in 1850's to sell it and was waylaid and killed. Is there any way to confirm this ? I understand that the courthouse burned and records were destroyed but maybe there is something that can confirm or debunk this story ????? He was living in Liberty County at the time. Left behind a wife and step-daughter.
